From September 2017, new students in England studying pre-registration nursing and midwifery courses will be required to pay fees on their courses. But what does this mean in practice? From this point, all students will now have access to the standard student support package of tuition fee loans and support for living costs - this replaces the existing NHS grant scheme, and brings nursing and midwifery students on-par with other students studying university courses.
As with the current student loans system, no up-front fees will be required, and repayments start at a very low rate, for example, a newly qualified nurse earning £21,700 will pay back their loan at around £5.25 a month. For some, the existing NHS bursary system fails to provide adequate support for living costs - the new loans will ensure that trainees will receive around 25% more funding support at university.
