Bespoke portfolio workshops

The most important item that is needed to apply for a place in art and design is a portfolio. A portfolio shows the interviewer a great deal of information about a student, such as what subject they are applying for, their knowledge and experience in this subject, what their interests are. It also shows the work they have completed in the past and their aspirations. Although the content of portfolios we see are often similar, the actual portfolio and presentation is different for each student and that is something we like in art and design. Our 10 steps to creating your Art & Design portfolio video is a great place for students to start when beginning their portfolio.

In addition to this if your institute would like a member of staff to visit to help your students with their portfolios or if you would like your students to attend a portfolio surgery at one of open days then please contact us.

Progression agreements

Last academic year we visited a number of schools and colleges, giving presentations on studying art & design at university. These institutes were offered the opportunity to link with Middlesex University through a simple Progression Agreement, which we are confident will help a wider range of students progress onto a degree in a specialist art & design programme at Middlesex University.

We would also like to develop new progression agreements and will be working throughout the year to do this. If you would like more information about a visit or about our Progression Agreement please contact us.
Open Days

Open days provide an opportunity to visit our campus, be introduced to art & design at Middlesex, tour our unique studios and workshops and meet and talk to the specialist staff in attendees chosen subjects.

They also provide opportunities to meet current students as well as to ask questions about courses and subjects such as admissions, fees, funding and finding accommodation.

Your students can register for our open days here.
Staff Profile: Andrew McDowall - 3D Manufacturing Technician

Andrew studied sculpture at The Slade School of Fine Art where he successfully graduated with an undergraduate BA degree. After graduating one of his jobs was with Conrad Shawcross, a kinetic sculptor, in which he worked his way up to become the studio manger. Whilst there Andrew taught himself the skills of engineering. He then worked at The Perse, a private sixth form college in Cambridge, teaching systems and control technology. During this time he also worked freelance for British Cycling and the Olympic Squad in research and development. It was doing this work that honed his skills in CAD and 3D software.

With his skills in sculpture, engineering and 3D visualisation and manufacture Andrew was a perfect candidate for the new position of 3D Digital Manufacturing Technician at Middlesex University which he started in 2015.

During the last year he worked with a number of students from a range of disciplines in art and design to help them develop and realise their ideas using this new technology. Some of the more interesting and challenging work was with students from the animation programme. This summer Andrew has been working on a dedicated workshop facility in art and design that includes several 3D printers using various materials such as resin, filament, powder and paper.

This year Andrew will continue to develop the area of 3D printing and manufacture in helping students to understand and manage the fundamentals of 3D software so that they can be creative, innovative and individual in realising their designs.

Finally Andrew recommends students that are interested in this technology to download some of the new and free apps from Autodesk (www.123dapp.com) and to experiment and play with them.
